On a cool Saturday night in Richmond, the stock cars put on a show at the Richmond International Speedway. Kurt Busch brought home Kyle Busch Motorsports its first ever Nationwide Series win. Kyle was ecstatic about the win for KBM. The race featured a lot of young stars making debuts and Danica Patrick was racing. Travis Pastrana is making his highly anticipated Nationwide debut. Ryan Blaney, son of Dave Blaney also made his Nationwide debut.
The finish will cover up for the long green flag runs that appeared throughout the race. The first caution came out on lap 23 when debris was spotted on the track. Kevin Harvick and Denny Hamlin would share the lead early in the race. The second caution of the night came out on lap 68 when J.J Yeley made significant contact with the wall.
The final caution of the night came out when Robert Richardson Jr. clipped Jason Bowles sending Bowles spinning on the backstretch. The free pass on that caution went to Danica Patrick. During the pit stops on that caution Denny Hamlin missed his pit stall forcing him to go around and pit again costing him a lot of ground that could have been used at the end of the race.
On lap 167 Kurt Busch went to the lead and would stay up there for most of the final laps. After green flag pit stops put Kevin Harvick ahead of Kurt Busch, Kurt Busch would eventually pass Harvick and never look back. Around 10 laps to go Denny Hamlin began to catch Kurt Busch. Coming to the white flag Kurt had a narrow lead of Hamlin. Hamlin took the lead in turns 1 and 2 but Kurt Busch battled strong back on the outside. Coming onto the front stretch Hamlin tried to get Kurt Busch loose which put Busch into the wall but Hamlin also got himself loose and Kurt went on to beat Hamlin barely.
This is Kyle Busch Motorsports first Nationwide win. One big storyline is how KBM wins their first Nationwide race. They beat a Joe Gibbs Racing car barely at the line. KBM team owner Kyle Busch used to drive for JGR in the Nationwide season before expanding KBM to the Nationwide series. In victory lane Kurt Busch commented “When you drive for a guy named Busch, you’ve gotta be on it.” Kurt knows how big of an opportunity it is driving for Kyle and he also knows the added pressure to succeed is placed on his shoulders.
The young faces of the night ended up finishing: Danica 21st, Blaney 7th and Pastrana 22nd. Travis Pastrana commented after the race about his finishing position compared to some other young stars, “Lowlight was probably getting passed by both the girls” Pastrana said jokingly. A huge night for Kyle Busch Motorsports results in a much-needed energy boost for Kyle and Kurt. The photo finish gives many people optimism of a great race Saturday night in Richmond, VA.
