Another complete domination of a Nationwide Race by Joey Logano occurred Friday night in Charlotte. Logano took the lead for the first time with under 70 laps to go and he dominated the Dollar General 300 from that point on. Logano has dominated the Nationwide Series this season and he won his eighth race of the season Friday night.
It took less than one lap before trouble struck. A slow start to the race caused for a chain reaction back in the pack and that chain reaction hurt Angela Cope’s car. Cope then blew her radiator and brought out the caution. After a lengthy clean-up period, the race resumed. It only took a few more laps for more carnage to occur on the track. Coming off of turn four, Sam Hornish Jr was racing Justin Allgaier and when Hornish Jr tried to clear Allgaier, Hornish was turned up into the wall. Allgaier held his line off turn four and Hornish tried to come up in front of Allgaier but he wasn’t clear just yet. Both Hornish Jr and Allgaier went behind the wall with heavy damage.
Ricky Stenhouse Jr took the lead on the restart and stayed up there for awhile. Stenhouse Jr led until lap 51 when Kevin Harvick took his first lead of the night. The third caution came out on lap 82 for Mike Bliss. Bliss got loose coming off turn four and he spun out, making contact with the outside wall and then he made hard contact with the inside wall. Championship contender Austin Dillon suffered a major blow during the pit stops under the caution. Dillon was given a pit road penalty for a tire issue. That set Dillon back in the pack with a lot of ground to make up.
The next yellow flag appeared on lap 90 for the No.38 of Brad Sweet who spun through the infield grass on the frontstretch. Brad Keselowski was the leader at the halfway point of the race followed by Logano, Stenhouse, Sadler and Hamlin. Kevin Harvick made a charge to the front with just under fifty laps to go and he took the lead with 45 laps to go.
All drivers needed to make quick pit stops to take on fuel before the race ended and we saw drivers start to make stops with around fourteen laps to go. Logano made his pit stop with fourteen laps to go and that turned out to be the money stop. Logano then returned to the lead once all the drivers made their stops. Logano then cruised around for the final few laps and took his eighth checkered flag of the year. Logano has essentially nothing to worry about so he can go all out for wins in any race he competes in this season. Logano is having a very strong year in the Nationwide Series and all Logano needs to do know is to transfer the dominance from the Nationwide series to the Cup series. If Logano can do that, he’ll become very hard to beat every time he’s on the racetrack.
Point’s leader Elliot Sadler finished the race third and he remains the points leader by thirteen points over Ricky Stenhouse Jr. Stenhouse Jr finished seventh and he was not pleased with his performance. Stenhouse Jr is now falling down the point’s ladder at a time where he needs to climb up it. Austin Dillon ended up finishing sixth and he is 29 points behind Sadler. Dillon will need some miraculous races if he wants to hold up the championship trophy come Homestead.
The championship hunt continues to heat up and more things are going to be changing before Homestead. Sadler has the championship lead now but one bad race and he could see that disappear. To find out what happens next in the championship hunt, tune in next week at the Kansas Speedway.
