Truck-tastic: Busch Beats Out Peters in Closest NCWTS Finish at Daytona

Kyle Busch’s prowess was on full display Friday Night during the Camping World Truck Series race at Daytona. Busch led a good portion of the 100-lap event and he edged out Timothy Peters at the line to win his first career NCWTS race at Daytona. The finish was the closest at Daytona for the Truck Series and it was eighth closest in Truck Series history.

Once the rain cleared out of the Daytona Beach area and the track was dried, Ben Kennedy led the field to green. Kennedy led the entire first half of the race, but a slow exit from pit road put him back in the pack after a Lap 50 caution.

Following that yellow-flag, an intense side-by-side battle between Timothy Peters and Kyle Busch went down for the lead. They stayed close before Peters was able to clear Busch with 37 laps to go.

The inevitable ‘big one’ struck around Lap 70. When Mason Mingus slightly glided up the track in front of Parker Kligerman going into turn 1, Kligerman had to slow just a bit, forcing Ross Chastain to get into the back of Kligerman. That contact sent Kligerman down into Mingus, turning Mingus head-on into the outside wall and creating a pile-up of about 13 trucks.

Other trucks involved include Sean Corr, Darrell Wallace Jr., John King, Caleb Holman, Brian Ickler, Joey Coulter, Brennan Newberry, John Wes Townley, Tyler Reddick, and Chris Fontaine. All drivers check out to be OK.

Kyle Busch led the field on the ensuing restart. He maintained the top spot until five laps remained when Timothy Peters challenged him once again. Peters cleared Busch for the lead with four laps to go.

On the final lap, Peters held the lead until the trucks stormed off of the final corner. Busch went high coming out of turn 4 and Peters unsuccessfully attempted to block him. Peters then drove back down to the bottom lane and the two engaged in a drag race to the finish line. Busch was able to edge Peters out, just like he did at Bristol last August

The win also was the last piece to Busch’s Daytona sweep as he has now won an event at Daytona in the ARCA, NCWTS, Nationwide Series, and Sprint Cup Series. Busch is the first driver to ever accomplish that feat.

Since Busch does not compete full-time in the NCWTS, the highest finishing truck regular leads the point’s standings following Daytona and that is Timothy Peters. Peters will sit atop the standings until the trucks hit the track again at Martinsville on March 29th.
